LED lighting for home: light design, LED types, calculation and installation
Lighting is not just about "turning on a light bulb." Properly designed light design transforms space: it visually enlarges a room, creates a mood, highlights accents, and makes the interior complete. LED technologies offer endless possibilities for this – from hidden ceiling backlighting to track systems and smart control from a smartphone. But for the result to be pleasing, not disappointing, you need to understand the physics of light, correctly calculate the power, and choose components for specific tasks.
Why LED
LED lighting has completely replaced incandescent lamps and compact fluorescent lamps (so-called "energy-saving lamps"). And there are good reasons for this. Energy efficiency – an LED lamp consumes 7–10 times less electricity at the same brightness. A 100 W incandescent lamp = a 12 W LED lamp at the same 1,200 lumens. Over a year, the difference for one fixture is 100–200 UAH. For an apartment with 20 points – 2,000–4,000 UAH annually.
Durability – a quality LED lamp works 25,000–50,000 hours. This is 10–20 years with daily operation of 6–8 hours. An incandescent lamp – 1,000 hours (one year). An "energy-saving lamp" – 8,000 hours (3–4 years). Safety – an LED lamp does not heat up above 40–60°C (an incandescent lamp – 200–250°C, which is dangerous for stretch ceilings and plastic shades). It does not contain mercury (unlike fluorescent lamps).
Design flexibility – LEDs are available in the form of lamps, strips, panels, modules, and track spots. You can create any shape and light distribution: lines, circles, waves, dots. You can change brightness (dimming), color temperature, and even color (RGB). No other technology offers such freedom.
Three levels of lighting: how a designer thinks
A professional approach to light design is based on three levels that overlap and create depth and atmosphere.
General (ambient) lighting – uniform filling of the room with light. This is the "background," the basic level of comfort. It is implemented with recessed spotlights in the ceiling, linear LED panels, or hidden backlighting around the perimeter of the ceiling. Norm: 150–300 lux depending on the room. General lighting should be sufficient to move freely and see everything in the room, but not too bright.
Accent lighting – directed light that highlights specific objects or areas. Track spots on a painting, shelf lighting for books, directed light on a decorative wall or textured stone. Accent lighting should be 3–5 times brighter than general lighting at the accent point. This creates contrast and "liveliness" in the space.
Functional (task) lighting – light for a specific task. Lighting for the work area in the kitchen (under wall cabinets), a desk lamp in the study, mirror lighting in the bathroom, light above the dining table. Functional lighting is bright and directed exactly where the task is performed. Norm: 300–500 lux on the work surface.
A common mistake is to use only general lighting. Uniform "flood" light from spotlights makes the room flat and uninteresting. Combining the three levels creates depth, mood, and comfort.
Types of LED lighting
Recessed LED luminaires (downlights)
Built into suspended or stretch ceilings, they provide directed light downwards. Diameter 7–15 cm, power 5–20 W. They can be fixed (shining strictly downwards) or swivel (tilt angle 15–30°, allowing the beam to be directed at a wall or object). Used as primary general lighting.
Placement: a uniform grid on the ceiling with a step of 1–1.5 m (depending on power and ceiling height). For the kitchen above the work area – every 50–60 cm. From the wall – 50–70 cm (closer – will create a bright spot on the wall and a shadow on the floor). Minimum ceiling opening – from 65 mm (compact models) to 120 mm (standard). For stretch ceilings, models with minimal heating and special thermal rings are required.
Brands: Philips (Meson, CoreLine series) – reliable, good CRI. Ledvance (formerly Osram) – excellent price/quality. Maxus – Ukrainian brand with decent characteristics. SLV – premium, wide range of swivel models.
Track lighting systems
A rail (track) is attached to the ceiling, and movable spotlights are hung on it. The main advantage is flexibility: you can direct light at a painting, a desk, or a reading area. You can add, remove, and move spots along the track without any ceiling work.
Looks stylish in loft, minimalist, and modern interiors. The track can be single-phase, two-phase, or three-phase. Single-phase – the simplest, all spots turn on together. Three-phase – allows you to divide spots into three independent control groups (for example: general, accent on the wall, dining area lighting).
Track section length: from 0.5 to 3 m. Connectors allow building L-, T-, X-configurations and creating routes of any shape. The track is mounted on the ceiling or suspended on cables (for high ceilings). For stretch ceilings – the track is built into a special embedded profile.
Track spots: power 10–35 W, beam angle 15°–60° (narrow – for accents, wide – for general). Brands: SLV (Germany) – premium. Nowodvorski (Poland) – mid-segment, good design. Kanlux – budget with decent quality.
LED strip
Flexible strip with LEDs on a self-adhesive backing. Mounted in an aluminum profile with a diffuser for uniform light. Creates a continuous line of light without visible dots (with proper selection of strip and diffuser).
Areas of application: hidden ceiling lighting (cove lighting) — the most popular option, lighting for shelves, niches, stairs, kitchen backsplashes, mirrors, contour lighting for architectural elements (columns, arches, niches), furniture lighting (under beds, under kitchen cabinets, in wardrobes), exterior facade lighting, terrace lighting, path lighting.
Types of LED strips:
2835 — standard strip with SMD diodes 2.8×3.5 mm. The most common type for white lighting. Density: 60 diodes/m (7 W/m, for decorative lighting), 120 diodes/m (14 W/m, for main lighting), 240 diodes/m (24 W/m, for bright linear light). Strip width 8–10 mm.
5050 — larger diodes 5.0×5.0 mm. Used in RGB (color) strips. Each diode contains three crystals (red, green, blue) and can change color. Power: 14 W/m at 60 diodes/m. RGBW and RGBWW variants also exist — with an additional white diode for high-quality white light (in pure RGB, white appears bluish).
COB (Chip-on-Board) — a new type with continuous illumination without visible points from individual diodes. Looks like a uniform line of light. Ideal for open installation without a diffuser (although it's still better with a diffuser). Width 8–10 mm, power 8–14 W/m. More expensive than classic 2835.
Protection class: IP20 — for dry rooms (standard for interiors). IP65 — splash protection (bathroom, kitchen, covered terrace). The strip is covered with a silicone layer. IP67 — full protection (outdoor, swimming pool). The strip is in a silicone tube. IP68 — underwater use.
Linear LED Luminaires
Ready-made linear modules for ceilings or walls. Suspended, surface-mounted, or recessed. Length 60–150 cm, connectable into a continuous line. Provide uniform, shadow-free illumination. Ideal for offices, corridors, kitchens, walk-in closets. Unlike LED strips, these are finished products with a housing, diffuser, and power supply (or direct 220V connection).
Decorative and Architectural LEDs
Neon LED strip (LED neon flex) — a flexible strip in a special silicone profile that mimics neon glow. Uniform soft light, can be bent in different planes. Used for signs, contour lighting, decorative elements. Recessed linear profiles — mounted into the ceiling or wall, creating a "river of light." Require planning during the rough-in phase.
Aluminum Profile for LED Strips: Why It's Mandatory
An LED strip profile is not just "for aesthetics." It is a necessary component, without which the strip will operate significantly less and look worse.
Heat dissipation. An LED strip with a power of 10 W/m or more heats up to 60–80°C. At such temperatures, the adhesive base (3M VHB) quickly dries out and the strip detaches. Diode crystals degrade — brightness drops by 30–50% in 1–2 years. An aluminum profile dissipates heat and keeps the diode temperature at a safe 40–50°C. Lifespan increases to 5–7 years.
Light diffusion. A milky (opal) diffuser scatters light from individual diodes and creates a uniform line without visible "dots." Without a diffuser, individual bright spots are visible — this looks cheap and irritates the eyes. A clear diffuser protects against dust but does not diffuse — it is rarely used.
Mechanical protection. A strip in a profile does not deform, does not collect dust, and is protected from accidental damage. Easy to clean — just wipe the diffuser. Without a profile, the strip collects dust on the adhesive surface, yellows, and deforms.
Types of profiles: Surface-mounted — attached to a surface (wall, shelf, under a cabinet). Simplest installation. Recessed — mounted into a groove cut into plasterboard, wood, or MDF. The front surface is flush with the plane. Looks the most elegant. Corner — for lighting corners, wall-to-ceiling transitions, kitchen backsplashes at a 45° angle. Suspended — on cables, for linear light above a dining table or work area. Flexible — for curved surfaces (arches, circles).
Brands: KLUS (Poland) — huge assortment, premium quality. TOPMET (Poland) — good price/quality. LedStore — budget aluminum profiles. Profile width — from 12 to 60 mm. For a 10 mm wide strip — a profile with a minimum 12 mm internal width.
Color Temperature and CRI: How to Choose the Right "Shade" of White
Color temperature is measured in Kelvin (K) and defines the "shade" of white light. This is one of the most important parameters that directly affects the perception of a space.
2700K (warm white) — yellowish tint, like an incandescent lamp. Creates a cozy, relaxing atmosphere. Ideal for bedrooms, living rooms, restaurants, hotel lobbies. Combines well with warm materials: wood, brick, fabrics. Visually "narrows" spaces and adds intimacy.
3000K (warm neutral) — a popular compromise. Slightly warmer than classic neutral, but without excessive yellowness. Works well in most rooms. A favorite choice of designers for residential interiors.
4000K (neutral white) — pure white without a noticeable tint. Comfortable for work: does not tire the eyes like cool white, and does not relax like warm white. Ideal for kitchens, bathrooms, offices, corridors, walk-in closets. Provides maximum color accuracy for objects.
5000–6500K (cool white) — bluish tint, like the daytime sky. Maximum visibility and contrast. Suitable for garages, basements, laboratories, operating rooms, surgical suites. In living rooms, it creates a feeling of sterility and discomfort — not recommended.
Tunable white (variable CT) — a modern technology where a single luminaire can smoothly change its color temperature from 2700K to 6500K. In the morning – cool and invigorating, in the evening – warm and cozy. Controlled by remote, smartphone, or automatically according to a schedule. Tunable white strips have two rows of LEDs (warm + cool) and a special two-channel controller.
CRI (Color Rendering Index) — how accurately colors are rendered under this light. Maximum 100 (like the sun). For residential use, minimum CRI 80, recommended CRI 90+. Where it is especially important: kitchen (to see the true color of food), bathroom and walk-in closet (makeup, clothes selection), art studio, clothing store. Cheap strips and lamps often have CRI 70 — colors look dull and unnatural, skin takes on an unhealthy tint. The difference between CRI 80 and CRI 95 is visible to the naked eye.
Lighting Calculation
Basic formula: number of lumens = room area (m²) × illuminance standard (lx) × safety factor (1.2–1.5). The safety factor accounts for lamp aging (brightness decreases over time), surface contamination, and losses in diffusers.
Illuminance Standards (DBN V.2.5-28:2018): bedroom — 150 lx, living room — 200 lx, kitchen (general) — 200 lx, kitchen (work area) — 300–500 lx, bathroom — 200 lx, study (desk) — 400 lx, children's room (play area) — 300 lx, corridor — 100 lx, garage — 100 lx, stairs — 100 lx.
Example calculation for a 12 m² kitchen: general lighting — 12 × 200 × 1.3 = 3,120 lm. This is 6 spot lights of 8 W each (550 lm each) or a 2835 120d/m LED strip 3 m long (1,100 lm/m × 3 = 3,300 lm). Additionally: task lighting under cabinets — a 2835 120d/m strip 2.5 m long (another 2,750 lm for the work surface, where 300–500 lx is needed).
Example calculation for a 25 m² living room: general — 25 × 200 × 1.3 = 6,500 lm. Hidden ceiling perimeter lighting: 16 m × 14 W/m strip = 224 W, ~2,800 lm (not enough for full general lighting, needs supplementation). Add 8 spot lights of 12 W each (1,000 lm × 8 = 8,000 lm) — total 10,800 lm, adjust to a comfortable level with a dimmer. Accent: 2 track spots of 15 W for paintings.
Important: calculation is a starting point, not an absolute truth. Light walls and ceilings reflect more light (fewer lumens needed). Dark walls and furniture "absorb" light (more needed). High ceilings (from 3 m) require more powerful sources. Always install a dimmer — it's better to have a brightness reserve and reduce it than to have too little and no ability to add more.
Power Supplies for LED Strips
LED strips operate on 12V or 24V DC (less commonly 48V). To connect to a 220V mains, a power supply (driver) is required. Choosing the right power supply is critically important: an underpowered one will overheat and burn out, an overpowered one is an unnecessary expense of money and space.
Power calculation: strip power (W/m) × length (m) × safety factor 1.2 (20%). Example: 14 W/m strip × 5 m × 1.2 = 84 W. Choose a 100 W power supply (the nearest standard rating upwards).
Types of power supplies: open (metal mesh, ventilation) — cheapest, for hidden installation in a switchboard or niches. Enclosed (sealed metal or plastic casing) — for wet and outdoor conditions, IP67. Built-in (compact, in a plastic casing with terminals) — for installation in suspended ceilings or profiles.
12V vs 24V voltage: for short segments (up to 5 m) — both options work. For long segments (from 5 m) — 24V is better, less voltage drop at the ends. At 12V and a length of 10 m, the brightness at the end can be 20–30% lower than at the beginning. Solution: power from both ends, or a 24V strip.
Brands: Mean Well (Taiwan) — industrial standard, reliable, wide range. Arlight — good price/quality. SWG — budget option. Important: the power supply must have protection against overload, short circuit, and overheating.
Dimmers and Brightness Control
A dimmer allows you to adjust LED brightness — from full power to a subdued soft glow. This is not a luxury, but a necessity: bright light is needed in the morning, soft in the evening, minimal at night (night light).
For LED lamps (220V): "dimmable" marked lamps and a compatible dimmer are required. Types of dimmers: rotary (classic — turn the knob), push-button (press — brighter/dimmer), touch, Wi-Fi (smartphone control). Important: not all dimmers are compatible with all LED lamps. In case of incompatibility — flickering, buzzing, unstable operation. Check the manufacturer's compatibility chart.
For LED strips (12V/24V): a special LED dimmer or PWM controller is required. A standard phase-cut dimmer for 220V is not suitable — it regulates AC voltage, while the strip operates on DC. PWM (Pulse Width Modulation) — the dimmer quickly switches the strip on/off (thousands of times per second), changing the duration of the "on" state. The eye perceives this as a change in brightness. The PWM frequency should be from 500 Hz — at a lower frequency, noticeable flickering occurs (especially on video).
For RGB strips: a controller with three or four channels (R, G, B + optionally W). Control: IR remote (basic, limited color set), RF remote (more functions, scenes, timers), Wi-Fi/Bluetooth (smartphone control, smart home integration).
Smart Lighting
Smart lighting control is not just about "turning on/off from a smartphone". It's automation, scenarios, adaptation to the time of day and your needs.
Communication Protocols:
Zigbee — a wireless protocol with a mesh network (each device retransmits the signal; the more devices, the more stable). Philips Hue, IKEA Trådfri, Sonoff Zigbee operate on it. A hub (gateway) is required. Low power consumption, reliability. The best option for large-scale systems.
Wi-Fi — each lamp connects directly to the router. Yeelight, TP-Link Kasa, Wiz. Does not require a hub, but each lamp is a device on the Wi-Fi network. With 20+ lamps, it can overload the router. The simplest start.
DALI (Digital Addressable Lighting Interface) — a professional protocol for commercial lighting. A separate two-wire bus, up to 64 devices per line. Used in offices, shopping centers, hotels.
KNX / Loxone — full-fledged home automation systems where lighting is one of the modules. Wired connection (99.9% reliability), integration with blinds, climate, security. The best option for new construction with full automation.
Smart lighting features: scenarios ("Movie" — dim general lighting, leave ceiling backlighting at 10%, "Morning" — gradually increase brightness over 15 minutes, "Dinner" — warm light over the table, dimmed general lighting). Timers and schedules. Presence simulation (turns lights on/off randomly when you are away). Color temperature change by time of day (circadian rhythm — mimics natural daylight). Voice control (via Google Home, Apple HomeKit, Amazon Alexa). Motion and presence sensors — lights turn on automatically and turn off after a set time without movement.
Installation: practical tips
Cove lighting. Drywall box around the perimeter of the ceiling with a niche for the strip. Niche width — 50–80 mm. Depth — from 50 mm. The strip is glued to the bottom of the niche or to the vertical wall (experiment with the position — uniformity depends on it). Important: always in an aluminum profile. Power supply and controller — in an inspection hatch or in the electrical panel (not in the niche — it will overheat). Power supply: lay a 2×0.75 mm² cable (for strips up to 50 W) or 2×1.5 mm² (for more powerful ones) from the switch or dimmer to the power supply connection point.
Kitchen backsplash lighting. 2835 120d/m, 4000K, CRI 90+ strip — in an corner profile under wall cabinets. The profile is mounted under the front edge of the cabinet (so that the strip is not visible when standing in front of the countertop). Diffuser — milky (otherwise individual diodes will be blinding). Switch — touch-sensitive on the profile or on the wall.
Stair lighting. Strip or recessed LED spotlights in the wall at step level. Each step is a separate group controlled by a "running wave" controller (when entering the stairs, steps light up sequentially, creating a guiding effect). Motion sensor at the top and bottom of the stairs. Strip protection class — minimum IP65 (wiping, dust).
Bathroom lighting. Spotlights — IP44 (splash protection). Area directly above the bath/shower — IP65. LED strip — IP65 in a profile. Mirror lighting — 4000K, CRI 90+ (accurate skin color rendering for makeup). Switch — outside the bathroom (PUE requirement).
Electrical requirements. Each lighting group — a separate VVGng 3×1.5 mm² cable from the electrical panel to the first switch/dimmer. B10 circuit breaker in the electrical panel. For powerful LED installations (from 500 W per group) — 3×2.5 mm² cable and C16 circuit breaker. High-power power supplies (from 200 W) — a separate cable. All cables — in corrugated conduit or cable tray.
Common mistakes
Only spotlights in the ceiling. A uniform grid of recessed downlights is boring and flat. Add at least one level: ceiling backlighting, track spots, or a pendant light over the dining table. The difference is striking.
Strip without a profile. After a year — detached, darkened, with uneven brightness. A profile costs 100–200 UAH/m — pennies compared to the total cost of renovation.
Cool white in the bedroom. 6500K is an operating room, not coziness. For the bedroom — only 2700–3000K. If you want flexibility — tunable white strip or smart lamps with temperature change.
Forgot about dimmers. Lighting without a dimmer is like TV volume without a remote, always at maximum. Incorporate dimming capability at the design stage. Adding a dimmer later — possible, but you need to check the compatibility of all components.
Saving on CRI. A strip with CRI 70 instead of CRI 90 costs 20–30% less. But all colors look dull, skin — unhealthy. In the kitchen, meat appears gray. Everyone sees the difference, even a non-professional.
Cost of LED lighting: benchmarks 2025–2026
Basic apartment lighting (LED spotlights + switches): from 8,000–15,000 UAH for a 2-room apartment (10–15 points). Track system (3 m track + 4 spots): from 6,000 UAH. LED strip with profile (cove lighting for a room, 12 m): strip — 1,800 UAH, profile with diffuser — 2,400 UAH, power supply — 800 UAH, controller/dimmer — 600 UAH. Total: ~5,600 UAH + installation ~3,000 UAH. Full turnkey lighting design (2-room apartment, 3 levels + control): from 25,000–60,000 UAH with installation.
Conclusion
LED lighting is a tool that transforms space. But only if used correctly: combine three levels of light, choose the right color temperature for each zone, and don't forget about CRI and profiles for the strip.
